What 3D printing gets wrong about itself

At a market, someone picks a piece up before I have said anything about it. They turn it over. A thumb moves along the surface, the way you test whether a thing is what it appears to be. Then the question comes. What is this made of.
When I say it is 3D printed, there is almost always a pause. A small correction happening in real time. The object in their hand does not match the word. For most people the word means unfinished. Rough. A prototype that wandered out of the workshop. Something on its way to being a real object rather than the object itself.
I understand where that impression comes from. Most of what people have seen from the process is the machine left to its own settings. The default output. A form that exists to prove the printer works, printed the fastest way it can be printed, then handed over as if that were the finish. Somewhere along the way, looks 3D printed came to mean looks unfinished. The field taught itself that, and then accepted it.
So the next thing I do at the table is hand the piece over and let them keep touching it. That is usually where the impression changes on its own. I tell them what I do not do. I do not sand these down. I do not coat them or paint over the surface. What they are feeling is the print itself.
The difference is earlier than the finish. It is in the layer lines being fine enough to begin with, in the printing being tested and reprinted until the surface behaves, in the care taken before the object is ever made. None of that is visible. It is simply the part of the work that decides how the visible part turns out.
The clock in the range is where this goes furthest. It carries the finest lines of anything I make. On a form that size you would expect to see the most, and instead you see the least. The lines are not really perceptible by eye, and you do not feel them under a hand. The texture on that piece lives on the inside, where it is meant to, faceted so it catches the light. A quiet surface outside, a considered one within. Both are chosen.

That is the part I want to hold onto. The clock is not a separate standard, only the clearest case of one. The rest of the range is finished with the same care. On a RIB piece the lines sit quiet enough that most people never find them. The ones who do tend to be the most attentive, the ones who read an object with their hands. They run a fingernail across the surface and hear it, a faint zip, the layers being counted one by one. That is usually the moment the process becomes real to them. Not a flaw they have caught, but a signature they have found. The trace of how the thing was made, left there for whoever looks closely enough to notice.
A layer line is a decision, like every other line on the piece. The failure is not the line someone can find. The failure is accepting whatever the machine hands back and calling that the object.
The process is capable of far more than the reputation it carries. What it gets wrong about itself is that it settles. It mistakes the machine's easiest output for its natural limit, and lets that stand in for craft.
I came to this from years of interior architecture, where the question was never what a room could hold. It was what the room actually needed, and what earned its place there. A printer cannot answer that. Neither can a faster setting or a cleaner slice. Only the person deciding can. The surface is one of those decisions. So I make it, rather than leave it to the machine.
